Amber Asks - My new interview series. (This is a personal effort not something I'm doing for my work at Arrikto, though there is some overlap.) The first one is with Dominik Fleischmann, the Kubeflow 1.7 Release Manager. I talk to him about the upcoming 1.7 release and more, but first a little backstory....

When I got started in Open Source (2009) one of the things I absolutely loved doing was interviewing people at conferences such as the Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS), Linaro Connect, Open Compute Project (OCP) Summit and in print for Linux New Media, You In Ubuntu and more.

I've missed doing this. I don't have a film crew following me around anymore, but I wanted to get back into it. I kept telling myself the following as to why I couldn't/shouldn't do this.

* I'm rusty
* I say, "you know" why too much
* I need to know [insert tool of the week]
* I move around to much, make facial expressions and roll my eyes,
* I don't like how I look or sound on camera
* I'm not as polished as [insert your favorite video/podcast personality or coach]

And sadly, I listened to the above...for a while.

People ask me all the time about how I got started in open source. I tell them to just "jump in" and "put yourself out there." I also reassure people, "You'll get better as you do it. Remember, no one is born with open source knowledge and that we all have to start somewhere."

As I went from Community Specialist to Community Manager, to Operations Director to Community Director to VP of Community and Marketing a funny thing happened...I stopped taking my own advice and started worrying about "not being perfect."

Funny how that happens, I don't think I'm the only one that's happened too either, but I don't hear many talking about that or how they overcome it. So this also serves to start that conversation.

No more excuses for not getting started again! I'll dust off the rust, work on not saying "you know" as much (WARNING: this first one I say it every other word it seems - Grrrr), I'll eventually get my setup right--lighting, mics, mixing boards, etc-- and work on my OBS (Open Broadcast Software) skills, update my website (or launch a new one) and get back at it. Rust, you knows and all. However, for now, I'm just going to jump back in and overcome my nervousness at starting again. So here goes!

As I mentioned, this first video is about the upcoming Kubeflow 1.7 Release. If you're interested in the Kubeflow 1.7 Release, want to know more about getting involved in the Kubeflow Community and more check out my first "Amber Asks" video.

Also, if you are in, near or around the Kubeflow community, or any of the open source communities or projects I've been involved with over the years (Fedora, Ubuntu, Linaro, Open Compute Project, Zeek and more) I'd love to share your story, too.  Reach out and you can help me get better at doing this and I'll share your story here and elsewhere.

Together, we'll learn and as I learn, I'll share. I'll improve all aspects of being back in front of the camera again.
